Silver City, ID

Fall is settling in and I have enjoyed being able to get out to some of my old stomping grounds. Jodie is in Virginia seeing our new nephew and spending some time with her sister so I decided to take the boys on a little adventure.

Saturday morning were getting ready and I ask Henry if he wants to go to a ghost town. He tells me "well, uhmm dad, lets just go to Costco". I won out and knew that my boys would enjoy the trip. We picked up Grandpa and with a makeshift diaper bag and some PB&J's from Aunt Amanda we were off.

We took the scenic route through Reynolds Creek and over Black Mountain and down into Silver City. We added a little rocky mountain pin stripping to Mom's cruiser while she was gone. The boys had a great time. Its a pretty active road and so it kept their attention. The boys walked the entire city, cemetery and then some.

The last time I was in Silver City was about 15 years ago for scouts. There are actually about a half dozen ghost towns in the area but most just have a cemetery showing that people used to live there. According to the watchman who is the only year round resident, the city has about 60 structures. All are occupied in the summer as well as the hotel that you can stay at. Out of curiosity I looked up the county code and they really are not allowed to change these buildings to much and no new structures can be built. There is a city water system but it is shut off in the winter to keep the pipes from freezing. Most buildings have no electricity and most still have outhouses. Pretty cool place.
